Tucked into an unassuming corner of Santa Barbara’s Funk Zone, Caementa Venetian Designs’ office and studio space stands in contrast to its industrial surroundings. At first glance, the studio building appears as a simple appendage of the garage space surrounding it. But that illusion shatters as soon as Caementa’s large doors swing open.

To step inside is to step into a venetian plastering cathedral and immerse yourself in the world of Leonardo Morquecho. Leo is a young, enthusiastic, and talented artisan who’s passion for his craft is undeniably palpable. He speaks of venetian plastering as a painter speaks of their finished canvases, as an author speaks of their favorite novels. As we discuss his background and the history of his business, Leo speaks of his training as a designer and overviews some of his favorite craftsmen and personal heroes, his eyes ablaze with ambition.

As a branding photographer tasked with capturing Leo’s freshly finished studio space, the question for me very quickly became: how do I create images that reflect the beauty that Leo sees in venetian plastering as an art form? How do I capture a degree of Leo’s enthusiasm, a percentage of his passion?

In addition to capturing Leo’s studio space, a goal of showing Leo within the space materialized in response to these questions. It was important for me to display Leo as a craftsmen within the studio space that he built and created, and it was my hope that his passion for design and his exuberant personality would shine through the images. Both Leo and his partner Marie were very accommodating and they helped me achieve this goal with their open mindedness.

The resulting images depict not only the mastery of Leo’s skillset, but also the humanity and personal touch behind Caementa Venetian Designs. Branding photography is so important because, in addition to showing the world what your business has to offer, it humanizes the products and services offered. By helping business owners create an image that reflects their authentic selves, branding photography allows people to connect with the brand on a deeper, more human level.
